Mustangs Play Through Winter Weather In Season Opener at EGR
The Portage Central Mustangs (0-1) played through bitter cold weather in a tough loss to perennial powerhouse East Grand
Rapids Pioneers (1-0), 15-10.
The Mustangs played well throughout the game, leading 3-2 early in the contest held at Memorial Field. EGR rallied and ended
the first quarter on a run, taking a lead of 6-4. The Mustangs and Pioneers traded goals through the 2nd quarter and the
Pioneers lead by 4 going into the half, 11-7. The Mustangs could never get closer than three in the second half, finally
succumbing at 15-10.
The small squad of 17 Mustangs were led offensively by Senior attackmen Zack Grusell (3 goals), Casey Mannes (2 goals) and
Kyle Martin (2 goals). Other offensive production was key to the game, which included goals from midfielders Eric Boyle, Matt
Schuen and Aaron Kosobucki. The Mustangs also played well at the face-off X, winning 20 of 29 face-offs with a combination of
players including Angelo Latora, Eric Boyle and Matt Schuen.
The defense was lead by Senior goalie Cody Greenlee who faced 40 shots, making 10 saves.
The Mustangs (0-1 overall) play again on Saturday, March 26 at Forest Hills Eastern at 2 p.m.

Mustangs Suffer Defeat at the Hands of Forest Hills Eastern
The Portage Central Mustangs (0-2) suffered their second straight defeat of the 2011 season on Saturday, at the hands of
division 1 opponent Forest Hills Eastern (1-0), 14-5.
The Mustangs were out matched all game as FHE dominated and ran out to an early 9-1 lead at halftime. The Mustangs
rallied in the second half with 4 goals, but it was too little, too late. The Mustangs were lead offensively by Senior attackmen
Zack Grusell (3 goals), and Casey Mannes (2 goals). Grusell added an assist and junior midfielder Angelo Latora tallied an
assist as well.
The Mustangs (0-2 overall) play again on Tuesday, March 29 at Forest Hills Central at 6:30 p.m.
