Grand Haven Game Report
Varsity - April 16, 2009 @ 6:30 P.M.

The Portage Central Mustangs (1-6) got a slow start in their first conference game of 2009 in the battle for the SWMLC Championship with Mattawan (6-1), and lost a nail bitter 6-5. The 39
to 37 respectively.   

The game started with a frenzied pace throughout the first quarter, ending in a 0-0 tie after 1 period of play. During the second quarter, the Mattawan Wildcats went on a three goal
unanswered run to end the first half up 3-0 on the Mustangs. The Mustangs, led by Cody VanderVeen scored two quick goals (VanderVeen and Brett Bergy) in the third period to draw within
one goal, with Mattawan scoring one in the third. Starting the fourth quarter down by two (4-2), the Mustangs continually fought hard and traded goals with Mattawan back and forth, always
keeping the score within one goal. Goals by Matt Ragains (2) and VanderVeen in the fourth quarter were key to keeping the Mustangs in the game. The Wildcat goalie played an
outstanding game, making two key saves in the last four minutes of the game to seal the victory for the home team.

Josh Kelly, the outstanding freshman net minder for the Mustangs, finished the game with 27 saves on 37 shots from the Wildcats and kept the Mustangs close the entire game. Great
defensive play from Rob Thomas helped the Mustangs to shut down Mattawan’s main offensive weapon. The defense was also anchored by Glenn Leeper and Mark Blankers who had 9
ground balls between them.
Friday Night Lights Lacrosse Mustangs Edge Grand Haven 9-8 in Overtime
The Portage Central Mustangs (2-6) edged the Grand Haven Buccaneers(5-3) to 9-8 in an overtime thriller at Gene Rothi Memorial Stadium in Grand Haven.

The Mustangs started quickly, ending the first quarter with a 5-1 lead, with goal distribution from five different players. Cody VanderVeen, Tyler Sams, Brett Bergy, Kyle Schram, and Tony
Beranek each chipped in one in the first quarter to spark the Mustangs to their best first quarter of the season.

Grand Haven fought valiantly throughout the second quarter, with three of their own goals. The Mustangs were only able to muster one goal in the second quarter by Pat Shields, and was a
omen of what was to come for the Mustangs. The third and fourth quarters were dominated by Grand Haven with four goals, and VanderVeen answered with one of his own in a tough
effort, playing injured throughout the game.  Grand Haven took their first lead with 6:25 left in the fourth. But, the Mustangs never gave up and late in the fourth quarter, Zack Grusell scored
to tie the game at 8. Both teams had quality opportunities at the end of the game to no avail. Josh Kelly had another outstanding game in the net for the Mustangs with 20 saves. Brett Bergy
led the midfield with three assists.

In overtime, the Mustangs won the first face-off with an outstanding effort from midfielders Cody Scuglik and Brett Bergy. The Mustangs then possessed the ball for close to a minute and a
half before Grusell scored from 13 yards out to give the Mustangs their second win of the 2009 season.
Varsity - April 20, 2009 @ 6:00 P.M.

The Portage Central Mustangs (3-6) may have gotten a slow start in the first quarter of their game against SWMLC conference competitor, the Battle Creek Lakeview Spartans, but  they ran
out with their first conference win in  2009 with a final score of 12-0. The Mustangs were led by multi-goal games from Tony Beranek  and Matt Ragains. Zack Grusell, Kyle Schram and
Cody Scuglik all contributed goals as well.

Freshman net minder Josh Kelly recorded his first shut-out in his short but impressive lacrosse career. The aggressive Mustang defense was anchored by Mark Blankers and Rob
Thomas who each contributed with ground balls and takeaways.

Rockford Game Report
Varsity - April 23, 2009 @ 5:00 P.M.
The Portage Central Mustangs (3-7) hosted the Rockford Rams (5-3) in their home opener on Thursday, April 23.  The Rams began the game with 2 goals in the first quarter while the  
Mustang's Cody Scuglik scored the first and only goal of the night for the team.  The Ram's continued their run, scoring 13 unanswered goals throughout the next three quarters

The Mustangs never recovered, having been out-shot 20 to 33 and lost the fight for ground balls 30 to 62.
Varsity - April 28, 2009 @ 7 P.M.
The Portage Central Mustangs (4-7) got back on track with a win versus cross-town rival the Kalamazoo United Giants (1-7), winning 16-1. The Mustangs were led by multi-goal games
from Zack Grusell (5), Cody VanderVeen (4), Cody Scuglik (2) and Tony Beranek (2). Other Mustangs that were involved in scoring with one goal each were Matt Ragains, Tyler Sams and
Josh Koss. Koss recorded his first varsity goal with his tally against the Giants. VanderVeen, Brett Bergy and Beranek also each chipped in three assists. Cody Scuglik, Kyle Schram and
Shane Campbell each added one assist as well.

Freshman net minder Josh Kelly recorded the win in goal, and was never really tested. He faced 14 shots and made 11 saves. The Mustang defense limited Kalamazoo’s opportunities in
the offensive end throughout the game.

The win keeps the Mustangs in control of their own destiny for the SWMLC Conference title. The Mustangs are 2-1 in conference play and 2-6 in non-conference play.

Battle Creek Lakeview Game Report
Varsity - May 1, 2009 @ 6 P.M.

The Portage Central Mustangs (5-7) outlasted the upstart Lakeview Spartans (3-7) tonight with a 11-4 win at Portage Central High School. The Mustangs were led by junior attackman Matt
Ragains with three goals and two assists.  Junior midfielder Cody Scuglik also had another solid game with two goals and six face-off wins. The offensive attack was balanced, as each of
the following players contributed one gaol to the win: attackmen Cody VanderVeen, Tony Beranek and Tyler Sams, and midfielders Tyler Hoopes, Zack Grusell, and Shane Campbell.  
Freshmen goalie Josh Kelly had six saves on the day, and faced 15 shots from the Spartans of Lakeview.

Classic, held at McCamley Field at 8pm. Admission is $5 per adult and $2 per student.
Portage Northern/Matt Thrasher Game Report
Varsity -May 2, 2009 @ 8 P.M.


The Mustangs were led by an outstanding performance by Junior Attackman Matt Ragains who led the team with 5 goals. The Mustang trio of starting attackmen dominated the scoring as
Junior Tony Beranek and Senior Cody VanderVeen scored three and two goals respectively. Shane Campbell, a transfer from Portage Northern scored a goal in his first game against his
former team.  The Mustangs controlled most of the action, as they led with 50 ground balls to the Huskies 32.
Freshman goalie Josh Kelly had 14 saves on 27 shots to earn his first Matt Thrasher win. Coach Sizemore has now won all five Matt Thrasher Challenge games, and has won his first as
head coach.  The Mustangs (6-7, 4-1 in the conference) travel to Kalamazoo Central High School for a rematch  against Kalamazoo United.
Varsity - May 5, 2009 @ 6:30 P.M.

Brett Bergy, Casey Mannes, Kevin Zhang and Josh Koss. Zhang recorded his first varsity goal with his tally against the Giants. Schram recorded 3 assists, as well as Bergy (2),
VanderVeen (1), Grusell (1), Shane Campbell (1), and Casey Mannes (1).

Freshman net minder Josh Kelly recorded the win in goal, and was never really tested. He faced 11 shots and made 6 saves. The Mustang defense limited Kalamazoo’s opportunities in
the offensive end throughout the game. Cody VanderVeen had his first opportunity in goal, relieving Kelly for the final period. VanderVeen had one save on two shots.

Mattawan Game Report
Varsity - May 7, 2009 @ 5:00 P.M.

The shorthanded Portage Central Mustangs (7-8) fell Thursday to the Mattawan Wildcats (12-3) at Portage Central High School 11 to 5. The Mustangs fell behind early and never
recovered. Mattawan jumped out to a 4-0 lead and the first quarter ended with the Mustangs down. The Mustangs were able to close the gap to two goals to end the first half. The Mustangs
lost steam down the stretch and were unable to mount a comeback.  The Mustangs were led by Cody VanderVeen with two goals, Tony Beranek, Cody Scuglik and Zack Grusell all
chipped in one goal a piece. Beranek and Scuglik also each had two assists to go with their goals.
The Mustang defense had a long game, playing without two starting defenders and protected during much of the game in their end of the field as Mattawan dominated time of possession.
Josh Kelly had 11 saves in the goal for the Mustangs on 27 shots for the Wildcats.  

The Mustangs, two-time defending Conference Champions, will finish second in the Southwest Michigan Lacrosse Conference (SWMLC) for the first time since 2006.
Junior Varsity - May 7, 2009 @ 6:30 P.M.

The Portage Central JV Mustangs kept the Mattawan Wildcats on their toes during the Thursday night game at Portage Central.  Goal tender Cody Greenlee had 9 saves in the game. Kyle
Martin had 3 goals and 2 assists. Jack Seuss and Austin Bashaw each had 2 goals. Markus Santos had 1 goal and Kegan Hoerle had 2 assists.  

The Mustangs won the ground ball stat and won 50% of the face-offs. The boys played very well and fought hard to the very end - a great improvement over the last Mattawan  vs PC
match-up. Only 2 penalties occurred during the entire game compared to 16 the last time. The boys made very good decisions and maintained their intensity throughout the game.
Holland West Ottawa Game Report
Varsity - May 11, 2009 @ 6:30 P.M.

The Portage Central Mustangs (8-8) are back on the winning path with a victory of 12-4 over the Holland West Ottawa Panthers (7-8). The Panthers kept the game close and led at halftime
3-2. The Mustangs rallied in the third quarter with seven straight goals, five in the first three minutes of the quarter to take a commanding lead. The Panthers cut it to 10-4, but the Mustangs
extended the lead in the 4th quarter with two more goals.
The Mustangs were led by multi-goal games from Tony Beranek (5), Zack Grusell (3) and Matt Ragains (2). Cody VanderVeen and Shane Campbell both chipped in one goal as well. The
Mustangs offense was a team effort against the Panthers, with assists by Tony Beranek, Cody Scuglik and Zack Grusell.

Freshman net minder Josh Kelly recorded 14 saves and faced 34 shots. The Mustang defense limited the Panther’s opportunities in the second half, as Kelly only faced 10 shots in the
second half. The win avenges an earlier loss to the Panthers 12-5 on April 14th.
Junior Varsity - May 11, 2009 @ 5:00 P.M.

It was a very exciting game on Monday against Holland West Ottawa. The JV Mustang boys executed very well on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field. PC again won the
ground ball stat, 36-29. Cody Greenlee had 12 saves and had a very solid game in the net, stopping 3 fast break shots at close range. The defense stepped up their game and for the
fourth straight game PC had less than 5 penalties. Cole Moorman led the scoring with two goals, Markus Santos had one goal, and Austin Bashaw had one goal and one assist. Kegan
Hoerle had one assist in the game.
Portage Northern Game Report
Varsity - May 13, 2009 @ 6:30 P.M

The Portage Central Mustangs (9-8) finished the 2009 regular season in dramatic fashion, beating the Portage Northern Huskies (7-6) in the closest
ball for most of the first half. Portage Central led at halftime 3-2. The Huskies tied the game at three, and even went ahead 4-3. But the Mustangs
hung in the game and tied it at 4 going to the final frame. The Mustangs scored the lone goal in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

The Mustangs were led by goals from Zack Grusell, Matt Ragains, Cody VanderVeen, Cody Scuglik and Shane Campbell. Cody VanderVeen, Matt
Ragains and Brett Bergy each chipped in one assist.  Freshman net minder Josh Kelly recorded 14 saves and faced 28 shots. The Mustang
defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, limiting shots and possession time for the Huskies.  The win solidifies the Mustangs into second place in
the SWMLC, and keeps a perfect record against  Portage Northern, having never lost a game to them.
Junior Varsity - May 13, 2009 @ 5:00 P.M.

The Mustang J.V team pounded the Huskies last night 12-3. With a score of 3-1 at the end of the first, the team never looked back. The score was
6-2 at half and the Mustangs held the Huskies to one goal in the second half.

The team was led by multi-goal games from Brandon Vitale (2), Cole Moorman (3), Kyle Martin (2), and Markus Santos (3). Kyle Wright and Kegan
Hoerle both chipped in one goal as well. The offense was a team effort with assists by Cole Moorman, Kyle Martin (3), Matt Beck, Kegan Hoerle
(2), and Austin Bashaw (2). Cody Greenlee recorded 6 saves and faced 21 shots. The defense limited the Huskies opportunities throughout the
game.
Grand Rapids Catholic Central Game Report
Varsity - May 21, 2009 @ 5:00 P.M.
The Portage Central Mustangs (10-8) beat the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars (9-8) at Portage Central High School 9 to 4 in the Regional
Quarterfinal State playoff. The Mustangs started off quickly and played well throughout the contest. The Mustangs dominated the 2nd quarter,
rattling off four unanswered goals to increase their lead over the Cougars. Portage Central was lead by Junior Attack Tony Beranek (4 goals, 1
assist), Senior Attack Cody VanderVeen (1 goal, 1 assist) and Sophomore Midfielder Zack Grusell (1 goal, 1 assist). Other Mustangs who
contributed on the scoring tally were Junior Attack Matt Ragains (1 goal), Junior Midfielder Cody Scuglik (1 goal) and Junior Midfielder Shane
Campbell (1 goal). Senior Midfielder Brett Bergy also chipped in an assist to push the Mustangs to the win.

The Mustangs were led defensively by Junior Defenseman Rob Thomas, who had the tough assignment of shutting down the offensive attack of
#22 from the Cougars. Josh Kelly, freshmen netminder, had nine saves on 36 shot.
East Grand Rapids Game Report
Varsity - May 27, 2009 @ 5:30 P.M.
The Portage Central Mustangs (10-9) lost to perennial powerhouse East Grand Rapids (14-4) in the Regional Semifinal, 13 to 7. The Portage
Central Mustangs held their own against EGR, finishing the first quarter down 3-1, with a goal from Senior Attack Cody VanderVeen. The
Mustangs rallied in the 2nd quarter, finishing the half down 4-3, adding tallies from VanderVeen and Junior Attack Matt Ragains. The third quarter
was the difference maker, as
well against a great attack from EGR.  Josh Kelly once again stood on his head in the goal, making 13 saves on 45 tough shots.The Mustangs
